On site in Suffolk – the conversion of an existing barn in the curtilage of a Grade II Listed house, to provide annexe accommodation for the client’s parent. Repairs have been carried out to the historic timber frame, which will be left exposed on the inside of the building. The frame has been retained as much as possible, with localised replacement timbers installed where necessary (see photos below).
A new oak structural frame has been installed to support the new mezzanine floor, with joists hung on concealed joist hangers which will be left exposed from below.
New conservation style rooflights have been installed for natural light, and the partition walls for the bedroom and bathroom are in place. The window openings have been formed and surveyed by okoHaus for new triple glazed Velfac windows. These sit outside the historic timber frame and have been carefully positioned to work around the key timbers.
Insulation will be added to the walls, using a combination of blown hemp insulation between the frame and woodfibre boards over the outside face. Above, the refurbished roof will also have Pavaflex woodfibre insulation fitted between the rafters, with woodfibre boards below. These natural, sustainable insulations will provide a significant improvement in the thermal performance of the building. They are fully breathable, naturally regulating moisture levels and reducing the risk of internal condensation, damp and mould – thereby providing a healthy living environment. Pavaflex also has high levels of thermal mass, meaning the roof will be insulated against summertime overheating. Internal finishes will be in lime plaster, which is both breathable and beautiful.
